Edmonton, AB (David Stanford) - The second event held by Aggression MMA brought together two of Canada's top welterweights to do battle, namely Claude Patrick and Matt Mcgrath, while two former UFC fighters, Jason Day and Jesse Taylor, tried to make their cases for returning to the promotion. With MMA legends Bas Rutten and Guy Mezger on hand to do the pay-per-view play by play, all the fighters stepped up and provided an exciting, action packed night of fights.
Jason" Dooms" Day vs. Jesse "JT Money" Taylor This was a fight that both men needed to win with Taylor coming in off of two straight losses under the Strikeforce banner and Day hoping a victory would allow him to return to the UFC when it comes to Vancouver. Team Quest product Jesse Taylor used his strong wrestling to take down Jason Day right off the bat in their fight. Once on the mat, Day looked to lock in a triangle choke but Taylor pushed his way out of the choke and began throwing some punches which cause Day to roll to his belly. Without a moment's hesitation Jesse Taylor locked in a fight ending rear-naked choke. (Jesse Taylor def. Jason Day via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 1, 1:14) Claude "Prince" Patrick vs Matt Mcgrath After a short feeling out process Matt Mcgrath shot in for a single and got it, however Patrick displayed some great Muay Thai skills by clinching up while on one leg, refusing to be taken down. Claude then used a fantastic reversal to take Mcgrath down to the ground where he got in some elbows from side control. Mcgrath worked his way back to his feet but was fed a hard jab by Patrick as the opening round came to an end. Mcgrath dominated the second round with great takedowns, four in total, but Patrick was equally impressive with his ability to tie his opponent up while on the bottom even landing some nice open palm strikes to the side of Mcgrath's head. The third and final round saw the tables turned as it was Patrick shooting in on Mcgrath this time and getting the takedown. From the top Patrick landed a couple of vicious elbows that open a gaping cut under the left eye of Matt Mcgrath. As the blood welled up in his eye socket the referee called for a stop to the action to have the doctor inspect the cut. The cut was cleaned up a bit and the action was allowed to resume. Knowing that the damage he had just sustained may have been enough to sway the judges in a decision, Mcgrath went for broke and dove in on Patrick looking for the takedown. This time though Patrick was ready, synching in a tight guillotine choke as Mcgrath took him down that forced Matt to tapout in seconds. In this bout, Claude Patrick demonstrated why he is considered one of Canada's elite welterweight fighters and Matt Mcgrath, with his grit and determination, let people know that he is a serious contender to any man at 170lbs. (Claude Patrick def. Matt Mcgrath via submission (guilotine) - Round 3, 2:29) Hardeep Singh vs Ryan Brigham Hardeep Singh showed that he is a man to watch out for in the featherweight division with a dominant performance over Ryan Brigham. Brigham started the fight out by landing a solid leg kick on Singh and Hardeep showed a good chin taking a right flush on the chin. That was unfortunately though the shot that awoke the warrior in Singh as he immediately dropped Brigham with a stiff straight right. Hardeep Singh then went straight after his downed opponent finishing him with vicious ground and pound. With the victory Singh improves his record to an impressive 9-1-0. (Hardeep Singh def. Ryan Brigham via TKO - Round 1, 2:33) Robin Black vs Matt Knysh The start of this fight saw Black take Knysh to the ground early on and from there he basically pounded away with elbows and punches for majority of the first round, and while Knysh defended well, enough shots got through to take their toll on him. The second round saw Black again almost immediately shoot for a takedown, driving Knysh into the cage. Just as Robin Black began to pound away from the top, one his shots lands to the side of Knysh's head and blows his Cauliflower ear. Matt Knysh is forced to verbally submit to stave off any permanent damage due to his injury. (Robin Black def. Matt Knysh via submission (verbal) - Round 2, 0:20)
Chase Degenhardt vs Dan "torture" Chambers In a very hard round to call, both fighters had their moments in control where they were able to do some damage. At the outset it was Degenhardt who was able to take Chambers down, landing some nice punches from the top and eventually going for a rear-naked choke when Chase rolled. Degenhardt gets slammed face first to the canvas as he is sitting too high on Chambers back when he stood and dropped to his knees. Dan worked some ground and pound from Chase's guard however Degenhardt who almost sunk in a triangle choke followed by an arm-bar while on the bottom. After a quick exchange to start the second, Degenhardt rocked Dan Chambers with a nice left hook which he followed up with a solid right that dropped Chambers. Seeing his opportunity to finish the fight Degenhardt pounced on his prey, pounding out a tko stoppage. (Chase Degenhardt def. Dan Chambers via TKO - Round 2, 0:55) Ilya Woronowski vs Lee Mein Lee Mein started this fight strong with a couple of nice takedowns from which he was able to mount Woronowski. Mein was unable to do much from the mount but Ilya eventually rolled and Mein went for the rear-naked choke. Mein appeared to have it locked in but somehow Woronowski powered his way out of it, reversing in Mein's guard. From the guard Ilya unloaded on Mein for a couple minutes before Mein managed to work his way back to his feet. But Mein found no relief from Woronowski's assault once up as he was pinned against the cage and with one arm being held Mein could do little to defend himself as he was dropped again by a big shot, forcing the referee to stop the fight due to unanswered strikes. (Ilya Woronowski def. Lee Mein via TKO - Round 1, 4:24) Adam Lorenz vs Tim Tamaki Tim Tamaki managed to get his opponent down on his back early on in this fight, but his advantage was short lived. Lorenz worked his way back to his feet before landing a couple of strikes and taking Tamaki down. Adam Lorenz was very patient on the ground as he took his time working for an arm triangle. Unable to get to side position to finish the move he finally opted for the less conventional and much more impressive mount position from which to sink in the fight ending arm triangle. (Adam Lorenz def. Tim Tamaki via submission (arm triangle - Round 1, 4:01) Marcus Hicks vs Matt Macdonald Matt Macdonald came into this fight and wasted little time of disposing of Marcus Hicks. Hicks got a quick takedown and controlled from the top momentarily but Macdonald scrambled back to his feet quickly. Once back up, Macdonald took Hicks down but again the downed man was back up in no time. Back on their feet Macdonald unloaded with a nice head kick which he used to clinch up with Hicks, From there a nice knee from Macdonald dropped Hicks to the ground. Macdonald then moved in and finished a huddled up Marcus Hicks with strikes. (Matt Macdonald def. Marcus Hicks via TKO - Round 1, 3:30) Igor Caetano vs Ben Snyder Igor Caetano came out the dominant fighter on this evening as he worked Ben Snyder with powerful leg kicks then used a slick wizzer takedown to get things to the mat. Snyder scrambled nicely and quickly made it back to his feet, but not for long as Caetano employed a WWE style body slam to take Snyder back down. Once on the ground, Caetano quickly locked in a tight arm triangle that had Snyder tapping out in a matter of moments. (Igor Caetano def. Ben Snyder via submission (arm triangle) - Round 1, 2:18) Tony Bibby vs Phil Wark This fight was called at the last minute due to Phil Wark having incomplete blood paperwork.
